
Founded in 1992, Institute of Buddhism Study of Northwest University was reorganized and authorized by the university, and now was headed by Professor Li Li’an. Based on the teachers in School of History who carry out Buddhism study, the Institute also has recruited some relevant researchers from other schools, departments and institutes, therefore has formed considerable research staff with reasonable specialty structure. The Institute now includes 9 professors, 5 associate professors and 4 lecturers. The researchers’ studying interest covers the following subjects: basic theory of religious studies, Buddhism history of India, Buddhism history of China, history of Buddhist cultural communication of Sino-India, Sino-Japan and Sino-Korea, Buddhist philosophy, AvalokiteÅ›vara belief, Buddhist archaeology, Buddhist literature, Buddhist ethnics, Buddhist life concern, Buddhist and traditional Chinese culture, contemporary Buddhist, development and utilization of Buddhist historical relics, Buddhist temples etc. The researchers’ study covers many specialties, such as religious study, philosophy, history, literature, archaeology, ethnics. The Institute of Buddhism has been the co-organizer of many important academic meeting successively in recent years, such as the Second World Buddhist Forum, the Academic Seminar of Buddhism in Chang’an, the Academic Seminar of the DaxingshansiTemple and Tantric Buddhism in Tang Dynasty, The Summit Forum of Giant Buddha in JunxianCounty. Moreover, the Institute of Buddhism has organized the Symposium of Buddhist Hot Issues, the Symposium of the relationship of Open Schools and Tantrism, the Symposium of Buddhism Study in Last Hundred Years.
